Walking man in the waking hour.
Blouson jacket and a long and empty road.
Ain't got no socks,
Got no shame,
Doesn't watch no clocks,

Size ten reeboks pigeon toed.

He straddles the concrete stallion, driving
Six lanes of blue a.m. traffic.
Monday's John Wayne rustling
Cadillacs.
"One day, I'm just going to start walking," he says.
"I've seen the way they look at me—or don't.
How their eyes just glide over the space I'm in like they're
Counting by twos.

I even do it myself now," he says.
"In sliding glass doors or the
Pull-tab lids on cans of peaches.
So one day, I'm just going to start walking."

Closing time for the lonely waitress,
Cleaning every stool that's pushed up to the bar.
And it's cold in the cab,
Where she hangs from her pearls,
And looks out in drag
At the end of the world.
Counts her worries in the car.

"In five years, I am beaten to death
While I lay here.
I reach for a set of keys dangled 20 years overhead.
I will miss by only a naked margin and this they will call self defense.
